COPA For Kids - COPA Flight 176 - 2014. by Rob and Janis This article was published in the December issue of the COPA Flight Newsletter. On August 22, COPA Flight 176 of Edmonton, held its 4th Annual COPA for Kids. The event was held at Cooking Lake Airport (CEZ3) due to the closure of the Edmonton City Centre Airport (CYXD) in November 2013. The past three years have each been a huge success with the number of youth flown each year increasing. The event was previously held at the Alberta Aviation Museum at City Centre Airport. We flew approximately 70 youth the first year. Steady increases brought us to 182 youth in 2014. We had some concerns about the move to an airport outside of the city, however, a week before the event we had 165 preregistrations, 12 pilots, countless volunteers and a forecast for sunshine! On the day of the event, the youth were introduced to the principles of flight before they met their pilots and were taken for 25 minute plane ride. After they returned, they collected their logbooks and certificates, had their pictures taken with their pilots and were treated to a bbq. During the year, our Flight made the decision to provide a $500 scholarship each to a local private and commercial student. These scholarships were presented at the event. The Eugene Strilchuk Memorial Scholarship, in honor of one of our founding members who passed away in February 2014, was awarded to Joelle Whittaker, a private pilot student at Freedom Air Services and Training Ltd. We were honored to have Eugene’s brother Larry present the award. The COPA Flight 176 Commercial Student Scholarship was awarded to Ryan Harris, a commercial student at Edmonton Flying Club. This award was presented by Flight Captain Terry Allen and Treasurer Janis Wallace. Prior to the event, we received a special request from a parent of a young girl, who participated in previous COPA for Kids events, to hold her 8th birthday party at the event. A birthday party with an introduction to flight was a day none of the kids will forget. An event of this size could not have been the success that it was without the support of the many volunteers and pilots involved. Cam and the Cooking Lake Aviation Academy welcomed us with open arms, letting us take over their ramp, yard and classroom for the day. As well, a number of local organizations contributed to the success of the day – ReMax, 700 Wing RCAF, Cooking Lake Condo Association, Davis Aircraft Services Inc., Centennial Flight Centre, Edmonton Flying Club, Freedom Air Services and Training Ltd., Namao Flying Club, Master Flo Valve Inc., and Canada Safeway. The success of the event this year being held at Cooking Lake has confirmed the support for the event in the greater Edmonton area. Three local airports have indicated their willingness to be the host airport for future COPA for Kids. The intention of our Flight is to hold the event at each of the airports. Plans are underway for our 2015 event which will be held at the Villeneuve Airport (CZVL).
