It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Bruce Byer, a long-time and deeply valued member of our COPA group.

Bruce was one of those people who quietly made our aviation community stronger. He was always present, always willing to help, and for many years he generously gave his time and knowledge teaching ground school at our COPA for Kids events. Countless young people first learned the fundamentals of aviation from him, and his patience, clear explanations, and genuine enthusiasm left a lasting impression on both the kids and the volunteers who worked alongside him.

He will be remembered not only for what he taught, but for the steady, positive presence he brought to every gathering. Our group is better because of the years he spent with us.

Our thoughts are with his family and close friends during this difficult time. He will be missed.

Sophia Wells engaged us at the COPA meeting last evening describing her early onset of a passion for aviation. Her relevant course was to be a pilot in the RCAF. Upon applying however and unbeknownst to her the application was in a computer format she was totally unfamiliar with.A response ‘REJECTED’ for her must have been so disheartening. Sophia though and as a tribute to her tenacity and determination never gave up. She chose another route that of civil aviation attaining not only enviable pilot skills with an ATPL but also Transport Canada authorization to endorse others. Sophia continues with her career and also is a mentor encouraging others with COPA, Elevate and Echo.. and of course a shining example of what determination can lead too.
